If you have not already heard it, welcome back to another year here at the Waukesha STEM Academy - Saratoga Campus! The science team spent parts of the first couple of weeks getting to know our new students and getting reacquainted with our returning students. One of our early activities focused on reflecting who each student was as a learner and setting goals for our first unit. Each student created a S.M.A.R.T. goal, that can be found in Google Classroom, of what they hope to improve upon during our first unit. This is a critical first step as students consider becoming better learners. We will be reflecting on these goals as the unit progresses and how each student is working to achieve this goal.
Physics: Forces and Motion
The first of five science units for the year will be a physics unit focusing on a variety of energy types. The students spent this week building background on perpetual energy and kinetic energy. We completed a kinetic energy lab where students had to conduct tests that included three variables. The class practiced their skills of procedure writing and working on precision in our scientific writing. Once we finish kinetic energy, we will move onto gravitational and elastic energy.
Classroom Procedures: Work Submission
The science class will once again utilize Google Classroom for work submission. Each assignment has a number and in many cases a due date attached. Students should complete the work by the due date. In order for us to give students immediate feedback, students will need to show a facilitator their work for it to get checked off. This way allows us to have a dialogue with students on their thinking, instead of just a complete or not mark. Students who are absent should check our daily slides for expectations, so they can make up any missing work.
