Science Happenings
During the past week, students studied the internal structures of a perch through a dissection lab. Students followed safety guidelines and models to demonstrate their understanding of how these structures allow an organism to survive in an ecosystem. Students took this knowledge and the understandings developed in the food web design brief and applied it to a simulation of three organisms, trying to establish a balance that would last 500 years. Finally, the class took time to share out our findings from our current science work. Students read an article about a misconception and why people had those thoughts about it. They shared their information and assessed their peers thinking through a set of complex questions.
Next Steps: Final Assessment / Inquiry
We are rapidly approaching the end of our first unit. Students will be taking several assessments on the ideas that were developed during the readings and activities in class. We are hoping to wrap up this first unit right after fall break. Therefore, we plan on launching our inquiry unit the first full week in November. The unit should take us to winter break. Please look for more details coming soon!
For All Rubrics and Science
The science team have published student checklists on For All Rubrics. The publishing process allows students to see their progress and completion in science from long-term point of view. These documents will now be visible in their ePortfolio for review. We are publishing because the checklists will start falling off students "To Do" list once two weeks has past in order to keep them focused on current material, but we wanted students and parents to continue to have quick access for a continuous review of student progress. Therefore, you may receive several emails this morning notifying you of this process. Remember, these checklists are not new documents, but ones parents and students have had access to each week and what we encourage all parents and students to review weekly.
Please remember any late work will need to be checked in directly with your student’s facilitator to get checked off.
