The science classes have spent the past two weeks researching a problem that students would like to solve (assignments #6-8). Students developed their ideas about a potential solution to the problem and how they might solve it scientifically (assignment #9). As a culmination to this experience we are working on developing our final products for how we will go public. The first piece will be a letter that students will send to an organization who has a vested interest in the problem they are solving. We have spent Tuesday and Wednesday of this week writing those letters based off the research students conducted earlier (assignment #11). The students will spend Thursday and Friday creating a print ad that highlights the need for a change to the problem (assignment #12). Finally, next week Monday - Wednesday, students will be developing a video that walks the viewer through the problem and solution that the students have focused on (assignment #13). We will wrap up the science inquiry unit on Friday next week, before spring break.
As part of the final assessment for the inquiry unit, students will be submitting artifacts from their work that demonstrates the level of proficiency they have shown. These artifacts can be sections of graphic organizers, portions of their video, or other segments they believe highlight their skills. We reviewed this process with students yesterday, March 11th, so they can reflect on or enhance any portion of the project they want ahead of the final submission on Thursday, March 19th.
