Core 1: Math 6A-
Our group is about to wrap up our unit on Rational Numbers, focus on multiplying and dividing. We will be heading into our next unit on Simplifying Expressions before Thanksgiving Break, so we will again pre-assess all the students to determine their level and which group (Hemphill or Burton) they will be in. Please continue to check FAR for proficiency as well as math continuums. Also, ALEKS should be at 100 topics complete, or more!
Cores 2 and 4: Math 6-
We are in the midst of our Ratios unit; students are calculating equivalent ratios along with proportional problem solving. They will be starting a scale comic project after Thanksgiving! Please continue to check FAR for proficiency as well as math continuums. Also, ALEKS should be at 100 topics complete, or more!
GROSSKOPF
Core 1: The students are working with angles in every direction! They have learned supplementary and complementary angle relationships, and are going to be using that knowledge to learn the 8th grade targets of angles. At the end of this unit, the students will have a choice on how they want to be assessed: traditional paper pencil, or, code a Sphero based on certain angle measurements!
Core 2: We are diving into the world of variables! Students have been working on simplifying expressions using the distributive property, and applying the past units of positive and negative numbers into simplifying expressions. They’re learning different strategies on how to simplify expressions, and are starting to specialize in a method that makes the most sense to them!
Core 4: Algebra students are wrapping up their work on the functions unit from Chapter 4. This means that semester exams are right around the corner! Upon the completion of Chapter 5 Linear Functions, students will have a few days of formal review sessions with both Ms. Grosskopf and Mrs. Hemphill before taking the semester exams during the week of 12/17-12/21.
To help prepare for semester exams students should continue to work on ALEKS and review work from previous chapters. At this point students should be at about 150 topics completed on their Algebra Pie. If your student is still in their 8th grade pie, they should be working to finish that as soon as possible. Please also continue to check FAR for proficiency as well as math continuums. A message with more details about semester exams will be coming out at a later date.
HEMPHILL
Core 1: Students just wrapped up their unit on rational numbers - at this point, students have now worked on all four operations using both positive and negative numbers. Each week students will continue practicing operations with fractions and decimals during our Wednesday skill review math routine. Any extra practice students can work on at home through ALEKS or even practice problems done with paper/pencil will be beneficial for retention.

WRAY
Math 8 (Core 1 and Core 2): Students in Math 8 recently finished the 8th Grade Numbers Systems unit. In 8th grade, the emphasis was on types of numbers, especially Rational and Irrational. Students started the unit with a Numbers Inquiry learning more about why we have different types of numbers and where numbers came from. Our current unit is on exponent properties. We will spend a couple weeks on this unit, then we will take our exponent skills and apply them to Scientific Notation. You can see how your student has done on the first four units of the year by checking For All Rubrics. Students also should continue making progress on Aleks. By the end of November, students should have at least 95 new topics learned.
Geometry (Core 4): Geometry students have finished the major Proofs units. Everyone has been proficient, which is amazing! Chapter 5 Geometry is on properties within triangles, followed by properties of quadrilaterals and other polygons after Thanksgiving break. Most students are progressing through Aleks quickly with many students already learning over 200 topics this year. The minimum expectation is 95 New topics by the end of November. Some students need to spend some time working on Aleks at home, so please check your student’s Aleks to see how they are doing. This is also something that we reflect on each month on For All Rubrics, so you can see their progress and reflection on there.
Independent Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calc (Core 4): Students in the Independent Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calc group have set personalized goals on Google Classroom as well as For All Rubrics. Each month, students who are working independently will reflect on their progress and set new goals for the next month with guidance and support from Mr. Wray. Check For All Rubrics to see how your student is doing with meeting the goals and expectations set personally for them.
