Core 1:
Core 1 just wrapped up their Inequalities unit (check FAR for summative assessment results and portfolio page completion); they will be heading into a unit on Ratios and Proportions. This is the time of year when we begin our conversations as a math team to determine if the path each student is on is appropriate for them. With that being said, if your 6th grader has/is struggling in this advanced class, I will be reaching out to you to discuss options for their 7th grade year.
MAP data is being mailed home and handed out to all STEM students on Friday, February 22nd. Please go over this with your 6th grader; are they trending upwards? Are they up to date in ALEKS (>60%)? Are they participating in class and completing the daily warm up problems? Have they finished portfolio pages and come in to re-do assessments that are not proficient? All questions to discuss when reflecting on the data.
We will be ready for our second Math Auction in early March, so if you are able to contribute items for them we greatly appreciate them! The first auctions were a huge hit, thanks to all that contributed. Send contributions to Mr. Burton’s room 125 any time up to March 1st!
Cores 2 and 4:
Cores 2 and 4 are currently in the middle of a unit on Expressions and Equations, where the focus is on order of operations, exponents, distributive property, and variables. Please check FAR for summative assessment results and portfolio page completion. We have been working very hard at regularly practicing adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; please ask your 6th graders to use those skills whenever possible (i.e. tips and tax on a food bill, shopping, filling up with gas, working on the budget…).
