Core 1: Math 6A:
Core 1 is wrapping up the 7th grade unit on Order of Operations and Equivalent Expressions. Students are taking the assessment the week of December 11th. Our next unit will be on Solving Algebraic Expressions. This time of year is good to check For All Rubrics (FAR) together with your 6th grader, and make sure all tasks are complete and proficient; also, checking the math continuum would be a good idea as well! ALEKS total topics should be at least 150, or more. There will be a holiday bonus for all topics completed over the Holiday Break, so encourage your 6th grader to work on ALEKS during the vacation, and they can earn some extra money for the next auction which will be around late February. Have a restful and joyous break!!
Cores 2 and 4: Math 6:
Cores 2 and 4 will be wrapping up the Ratios and Proportions unit by the start of the Holiday Break. Students will have three (3) mini assessments within the unit, along with the Scale Comic Project. Our next unit will be on Number Systems, which we have already slightly bebun with our weekly fraction and decimals practices. Core 1: Math 7A
Expressions and equations! Students have been immersed in using order of operations, combining like terms, and distributive property to simplify expressions. As we progress into our next unit on solving equations algebraically, students will continue to use these skills to solve for an unknown value and will eventually write equations to finding missing angles in geometry. As we enter the second half of the school year, students in this class will dive into 8th grade learning targets. With covering 3 years of math in one, you should expect to see your student working on math daily at home. Even with Connect and Flex, it will be challenging for your student to complete the necessary work at school. At this point of the year, students should be close to completing their 7th grade ALEKS pie (goal is to finish by the start of February) so they can finish their 8th grade pie by the end of the year. Ask your student to share their continuum with you, and enjoy break!
Core 2: 7th Grade Math
Expressions and equations! Students have been immersed in using order of operations, combining like terms, and distributive property to simplify expressions. As we progress into our next unit on solving equations algebraically, students will continue to use these skills to solve for an unknown value and will eventually write equations to finding missing angles in geometry. At this point of the year, students should be at 178 ALEKS topics completed when they come back after break. Ask your student to share their progress on FAR as well as their continuum with you, and enjoy break!
Core 4: Our Algebra learners have been preparing for their Mid-Year Exams for the last week. Monday, December 17th will be the first day of exams, wrapping them up by Friday, December 21. We encourage study time at home, Connect, and FLEX. All the kids have been provided additional review resources and answer keys via Google Classroom, and have encouraged them to look back and re-do math homework, the chapter reviews in the textbooks at the end of the chapter, and re-do the Chapter Review PDFs. Over break, it would appreciated if your learner could find some time to work on their Aleks pies. This would be a great way to stay fresh on their skills.

Core 1: The learners in Core 1 are all over the place! We have four different units going on currently, and the kids are in different spots in these units. We have Math 8 Transversals & Transformations, Math 7 Circles and Inequalities. The learners are truly running their time in class, conferring with other learners, and checking off each other’s work. The community has really grown and we truly depend on one another. Today, we discussed pacing and how it could affect getting into Algebra 1 in the fall. If your student isn’t midway through the Transformations unit, they are slightly behind and may have to put in extra time outside of class to catch up. Over break, it would appreciated if your learner could find some time to work on their Aleks pies. This would be a great way to stay fresh on their skills, and more specifically, the current unit.
Core 2: We have been diving into equations and geometry! Our learners have been applying solving equations to solve for angles, and we’re working on justifying their angles with proper vocabulary. We’re hoping to wrap up this unit after winter break. Over break, it would appreciated if your learner could find some time to work on their Aleks pies. This would be a great way to stay fresh on their skills, and more specifically, the current unit.

Math 8 (Core 1 and Core 2): As we head into our winter break, Math 8 students have completed our first 6 units. This month, we have done Exponent Properties and Scientific Notation. Exponents are used a lot in math and in real life, but when working with them independently, the rules can get a bit confusing. Students have persevered through this and everyone was able to complete the exponent properties unit. When we return from winter break, we will begin our Functions Unit, which is our biggest and longest unit of the year. Students will need to come-in for Connect and Flex to turn-in any late work from our first six units or work-on incomplete or missing assessments. Please check For All Rubrics to see if your student has any missing work and what they can be working on at home to get caught-up, or give them a big them a big high-five if they don’t have any missing work. Students also should continue making progress on Aleks. By the end of December, students should have at least 120 new topics learned.
Geometry (Core 4): Geometry students have been working on Quadrilateral properties for the month of December. This unit is out last unit for 1st semester and the goal is to have it completed (including the assessment) before leaving for Winter break. When we come back, we will spend a few days reviewing all of the 1st semester concepts and then take the 1st semester exam. This can be stressful for some students, but everyone has been doing great so far this year, so there’s nothing to worry about...everyone is going to do great!
On Aleks, the minimum expectation is 120 New topics by the end of December. Some students need to spend some time working on Aleks at home, so please check your student’s Aleks to see how they are doing. This is also something that we reflect on each month on For All Rubrics, so you can see their progress and reflection on there.
Independent Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calc (Core 4): Students in the Independent Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calc group have set personalized goals on Google Classroom as well as For All Rubrics. Each month, students who are working independently will reflect on their progress and set new goals for the next month with guidance and support from Mr. Wray. Check For All Rubrics to see how your student is doing with meeting the goals and expectations set personally for them.
