Hello! The school year is off to a great start in the Choir Room! Students have been busy learning about the singer's instrument (the whole body head to toe) and developing a healthy posture for singing in both a standing and seated position.
Please read the following to learn more about expectations in choir class and our upcoming performances.
Classroom Expectations:
* Arrive on time and be ready to work
* Have all of your materials: Folder, Pencil, and iPad
* Absolutely no gum or food in class
* Participate with appropriate behavior and a positive attitude, reflecting pride in yourself
and in the choir
* Support and be respectful toward every member of the choir at all times
Homework Expectations:
Most assignments will be completed during class time. However, there may be situations in which a students will need to take work home to complete. Students are expected to practice their songs at home.
Grading:
Students are graded on
1. Ensembleship (accountability and productivity)
2. Theory work assigned and completed during class
3. Vocal assessments of concert songs
4. Concert performances.
Concert Attendance:
Participation in concerts is required and is graded as a summative because this is a performance based class. Choir is a "team sport", and the success of our performance is dependent on the commitment of all members. Concerts are considered the culminations of all learning working up to the concert.
Due to the nature of a live concert experience, it is very difficult to provide a make-up assignment for a student who does not participate.
Communication is important: Students who cannot be at a concert should have their parents notify Ms. Miller in writing 2 weeks prior to the concert. Please detail the conflict as it may be resolved through cooperation.
Unexpected emergency: In case of an unexpected emergency, the student must provide a written note to Ms. Miller from a parent the next time choir class meets. Students who do not show up for concerts without a note will be considered unexcused and will not have the opportunity to receive credit.
Concert Dress:
Concert dress is required for all concerts and performances unless otherwise stated. TIP: Prepare these items in advance so you are not in a bind at concert time.
In the event you cannot provide one of the following items for your child, please contact Ms. Miller immediately. Many of the items can be borrowed from our STEM Concert Closet.
Performance attire is as follows:
Plain black from the waist down including belts, socks, stockings, and shoes. Slacks, knee-length, and floor length skirts are acceptable. Plain dark tights or leggings must be worn with skirts. (Please do not wear shorts, capris, or exercise style pants, flesh-toned, colored, or patterned stockings)
Plain white top that covers the shoulders. (Please no prints, pictures, or large logos, sleeveless or spaghetti straps, cut-outs, sheer fabrics, or cold-shoulder tops.)
